4 Tips for Preventing Water Damage
- On July 20, 2017
Water damage is a costly nuisance. The best way to deal with water damage is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Use the following tips to stop water damage before it happens.
Get Detection Devices
Get devices that will alert you to the presence of a water leak. Place them in vulnerable areas, such as near sinks, toilets and washing machines. These will let you know when something is leaking and will prevent a problem from getting bigger than it should be.
Maintain Your Gutters
When gutters get clogged with leaves, dirt and debris, water can build up and damage your roof. It can also cause puddles near the basement of your home, which can lead to a leak. Make sure to clean your gutters frequently. In addition, keep them well maintained. Make sure there are no cracks, loose bolts or peeling paint. If needed, get new gutters.
Maintain Your Appliances
Always be on the lookout for faulty sinks, washing machines, dishwashers, toilets and other appliances. If you see cracks appearing or paint peeling off, it may be time to get it fixed. In particular, check your washing machine’s hoses. If your appliances are old, consider replacing them with new ones.
Be Careful Not to Clog
If something can go in the waste bin, put it there instead of in the toilet. Don’t put in materials that don’t dissolve well, such as baby wipes. The same goes for your kitchen sink; never pour grease or foods down the sink when you can throw them in the garbage.
