Virginia Woolf, the Importance of Office Cleaning and the Comparison of 2 Work Environments
- On April 14, 2015
Virginia Woolf has been quoted as saying, “It seems as if an age of genius must be succeeded by an age of endeavor; riot and extravagance by cleanliness and hard work.” It’s true that most cultures and civilizations value genius very highly. We all want to get things done quickly and get them done right. We believe in a “stroke of genius.”
However, there’s also something to be said about working slowly and steadily. By doing this, you can often achieve the same things as you can when you’re a genius. Cleanliness is one of those things that doesn’t require any particular form of genius. And yet, it’s very important in the long run.
If you run a business, small or large, you can benefit by getting office cleaning services. Not only will these result in a more pleasant work environment, they are, in fact, absolutely essential to produce the kinds of results you’re looking for in terms of productivity and creativity.
Consider the following two environments:
Environment #1
In this environment, a man is sitting in a small office with a threadbare carpet. There’s a layer of dust over some of his books because the cleaners haven’t been in for a while. Plus, it looks like the garbage under his desk doesn’t get taken out everyday. So there’s a slight smell of yesterday’s lunch going bad.
The man sighs and looks out the window but the window hasn’t been cleaned in several months. So there’s a layer of grime over it which doesn’t let the sun in. When the man gets up to use the bathroom, he finds a large waterbug in one corner and has to kill it.
After this, the man is so irritated that he needs a break from work. So he heads off to the break room to get a coffee and a snack.
Environment #2
On the other hand, consider an environment in which several people are sitting at a central table, each working on their own assignments. Since the workplace is not very big, even the boss sits in the same room with his assistant. Everyone speaks softly so as not to disturb the others.
There are a number of files in this room, placed against the walls. However, the files are neatly organized so that everything can be found as and when needed. There’s no dust in this room and the window, although small, is clean and looks over a street. There isn’t much decoration in this office but the grey wall-to-wall carpeting is clean and there are no scratches or stains on the walls.
Even though the employees don’t get paid as much as the man in the dirty office, they’re happy and productive. As a result, they stay at their posts for a long time.
As you can see, having a clean environment makes things a lot more pleasant for employees and results in greater productivity. Contact us if this is the type of environment you’d like to recreate in your offices.
